ABOUT TONYA

Determined to give back to the community

Tonya is a native Houstonian who grew up in Houston’s South Park/Sunnyside neighborhood and is a proud graduate of Jesse H. Jones Senior High School. Tonya completed her undergraduate studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. While at Baylor, Tonya was actively involved in several student groups and service organizations. She was a member of Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity as well as Chaplain of her sorority. One of her most significant roles at Baylor was her service as a Baylor Ambassador charged with meeting with local state legislators to advocate the importance of maintaining the Pell grant. This was important to her as a first-generation college student who struggled the various obstacles related to the pursuit of higher education.

Determined to give back and be a positive influence within her community she made the decision to attend law school at Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During her tenure at Southern, Tonya was actively involved in the Black Law Student Association, Recruitment Committee, and Criminal Law Clinic which provided legal representation to some of Baton’s Rouge’s most vulnerable citizens. After graduation, Tonya worked as a legal fellow with the Travis County Juvenile Public Defender’s Office.

Tonya was admitted to the Texas bar in 2011 and began her legal career as an intern at the prestigious Ramos Family Law Group, where she honed her knowledge of family law.  She then became Associate Attorney for the distinguished Law Offices of Wilvin J. Carter where she sharpened her skills as a litigator. Her wealth of diverse experience and passion for public service gives her a unique and fresh perspective to bring to the bench.  Tonya is the oldest of five children. Tonya started her own legal practice Jones Law, PLLC in 2017. She attends Greater New Testament Baptist Church and is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Inc.
